Ornamental shrubs are very commonly used, especially in landscaping as foundation plantings, screens, and backgrounds. They are also utilized as front walk and driveway accents. Through pruning and training, it’s possible to adapt many species to a tree form. However, most of the time they are maintained in their bush form. Our nursery on Long Island has various styles of ornamental shrubs to choose from with different care needs as well.
Shrubs that are planted near the foundation of the home are also known as foundation plantings. This is a major feature of any landscape. These shrubs are carefully selected to match the exterior design of the home. Common shrubs that our nursery on Long Island provides for this purpose include glossy abelias and barberries..
These medium-sized ornamental shrubs grow to a height of about five feet with rich, shiny green foliage. During the summer, they produce pink to white bell shaped flowers. In warmer climates, glossy abelias are evergreen but are more deciduous in colder temperatures.
These ornamental shrubs come in many different varieties at our nursery Long Island, some of which are evergreen while others are deciduous. These are definitely considered to be smaller shrubs, as they only reach about four feet in height at the most. The size of barberries is easy to control with regular pruning. In addition, they’re able to tolerate a large array of soil and climate conditions.
Screen and Background Planting
To prevent unwanted views within a property, it’s essential to use ornamental shrubs for screen and background planting. Our plant nursery Long Island highly recommends using them in place of a privacy fence, as they add greater beauty to your yard. They can also provide a background for smaller shrubs. Fountain butterfly bushes and japonica shrubs are some of the most commonly used ornamental shrubs for these purposes.
Fountain Butterfly Bushes
These upright shrubs have arching branches that widely spread out. They also grow fast and are well adapted to winter. In the mid-spring, these shrubs grow small, purple flowers that are borne on long spikes. Meanwhile, their foliage is willowy and the colors range from gray to gray-green.
Japonicas are known for being some of the most versatile ornamental shrubs found at our plant nursery Long Island. This is because they have both evergreen and deciduous varieties. These shrubs have found the most popularity in New Mexico thanks to their attractive foliage, which has many different colors and varieties. They’re also capable of producing red-orange berries when the conditions for pollination are favorable.
To complement driveways, walkways, garden paths, or other high traffic areas of property, accent shrubs are typically planted. It’s not uncommon for them to be used to create privacy in smaller areas of an overall larger landscape. Our nursery on Long Island recommends dogwoods and pampas grass the most for these applications.
These hardy, upright shrubs are more suitable to colder climates than other species of dogwood found at our plant nursery Long Island. Although they have a moderate growth rate, they can easily reach up to 10 feet in height. Small white to yellow flowers tend to bloom in late spring, as well as white to blue berries in the fall. When it gets cold, the branches of these shrubs transform into a beautiful coral red color.
These popular shrubs are upheld by our nursery on Long Island for their feathery, cream to pink colored panicles that are apparent early on in autumn. However, they carry sharp, narrow leaves that must be handled with care. The top tends to die in the winter but the hardy roots allow it to grow once again in the spring.
